Tämnarån has its source from Lake Tämnaren located about 2.5 mil north of Uppsala. On his about 5 mil long, winding journey to the sea by Tierps plain flat farming district is the height differences quite large and it flows aut into the sea wid Lövstabukten

Along the river are burial ground with mounds and stone circles from the Iron Age and there are four old iron works. The distance between Strömsberg - Karlholm is rich in small rapids.

There are yearly releases of brown trout and it also works with fisheries care, to create better opportunities for sea trout to reproduce.
