About

Indalsälven (the Indal river) is one of the biggest rivers in Sweden. It originates in the area surrounding the Åre mountains, and is highly regulated. The river descends to the sea near Timrå.

Bergeforsens fish conservation area is divided into three zones. Zones 1 and 2 are called the “Stream fishing”. Zone 1 starts just below the watermill of Bergefors, and only salmon fishing is allowed. In zone 2, fishing from the bank and fishing from the hired boats is allowed. Zone 3 is called the “Delta fishing”. It is about 7 km, and stretches all the way to the sea. In zone 3, it is allowed to fish from the bank, from one of the hired boats, or from your own boat.

The salmon starts to migrate in the beginning of June, with its peak around midsummer. The salmon has increased in numbers the latter years, and sometimes fish around 20 kg are caught. The sea trout fishing is at its best in the springtime, from end of April, into May. The autumn fishing starts around September.

One popular spot is the Stavrevik curve, where a lot of salmon rest in the deep holes. Here it is common to use spinning gear, with flies and a sinker, or big, heavy spoons, to get down to the fish. There is even an opportunity to rent a boat for those who want to try the so called “harling” fishing (trolling with a fly).

More about fishing

There are special safety rules that you have to follow. All fishermen have to use the prescribed safety equipment while fishing in zone 1 and 2. Special life vests can be borrowed at the sportsfishing office in hotel Laxen before the fishing starts at 07:00–07:30, or 18:00-18:30. The borrowed equipment is to be handed back immediately after the fishing is over. When the water in the river is high, more than 1100 m3/s, the fishermen on zone 1 have to move to zone 2, due to safety precautions.

The river is regulated by dams, so you have to carefully watch for changes in the current conditions and water level! Fish at your own risk!
